Paphos is on the south west
coast of Cyprus and is in two distinct sections – Ano
[sometimes referred to as Ktima] (upper) and Kato (lower),
they are about 2 km apart and within easy commuting
distance of each other. The city was the capital of Cyprus
in Roman times and legend has it that it is built on the
spot where the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, was born.
Intercity buses and service taxis arrive at Ano Paphos and
to get to Kato Paphos you can take a local bus, walk
or call a taxi. The main local language is a dialect of
Greek but English is widely spoken in all the tourist
areas.
Paphos
is a delightful area combining both culture and
entertainment in a convenient sized package. There are
many stunning archaeological gems such as the Roman
Mosaics and Tombs of the Kings all side by side with
resort hotels and beaches.
Its
quite a user-friendly town and provides a lively and
friendly ambiance, local people are extremely pleasant –
take a morning stroll in the harbour area and call in one
of the many cafes for a coffee (or whatever takes your
fancy).
There are some
wonderful shops in both parts of the town - many jewellers,
leather shops and opticians in all parts of Paphos offering
their goods at a very competitive price (much cheaper than in
the UK).
The market in Ano
Paphos is not to be missed for those people who enjoy a market
stroll and a bit of bargaining. It is well worth visiting -
plenty of lace shops and good quality Cypriot souvenirs.
As for accommodation, if you want a superb hotel, we have favoured the Athena Beach Hotel south east
of Kato Paphos and always received excellent service,
accommodation and eats.
