Nantwich is a real nice place with plenty of character and
history. Guided tours/walks of the centre of the town are
available where a commentary of the historical background of
the town is voiced. Most of the industrial Nantwich has now
gone but remnants of the salt workings, the leather, boot/shoe
and clothing industries can be found in the museum and the
surrounding areas. Today's town is expanding rapidly with an
outburst of new domestic buildings for people who now have to
find work mostly outside the town area.
At one time, Nantwich
had its own castle, built by one of the Malbank brothers in
approximately year 1160. The castle is there no longer - now
Gregory's nightclub stands on the site - just off Bowers Row.
The Shropshire Union Canal forms a boundary to the west
of the town. There is a viaduct across the main Chester
road and a 'basin end' where facilities exist for boat hire, moorings
and chandlery etc. The canal is frequented by locals as
well as tourists/bargees and provides ideal opportunities
for fishing, boating or just enjoying the peace of the
countryside by walking the towpath. |
