From: Catherine Nicholson
Subject: 9/12th Royal Lancers
Message: My father was Thomas Mulhearn and was a Corporal in the above Regiment when he was captured in Italy on May 8th 1944. He was moved to a prison camp in Germany. I know he was on the long march to Fallingbostel. He was liberated on May 10, 1945. I am researching him because I am writing a book and want to include this along with his military history. He died in 1990 without talking to much about his experiences. He was a Desert Rat in North Africa in 1942. If anyone knows any info on him or the conditions in Fallingbostel I would love to hear from them.

Saturday February 14th 2004

From: Bill Avery
Subject: 78 Coy RASC Korean War
Message: I did my National Service as a Driver (Service Number T/22653299) for 78 Coy RASC in Korea from April 1952 to April 1954. After some initial training at Aldershot, the majority of my training was at Yeovilton in Somerset. We sailed out to Korea on the Empire Asturias (?), arriving first of at Kure in Japan after about six weeks sailing. After arriving in Pusan in Korea we were transported up to Inchon to pick up our lorries. I had a Bedford QL and we drove in convoy to Middle School in Seoul where we were stationed for the duration of our service. I was assigned to the 29th Brigade and transported munitions, supplies and personal to them. After completing my service I spent two weeks in Britcom General Hospital in Kure, before disembarking on the Empire Windrush. Some of us got off the Windrush at Singapore because of engine problems. The Windrush later had an explosion in the Engine Room and sank. We completed our return journey on the Empire Orwell to Southampton. My memory is not too good now and I would be interested if anyone has any recollections of these events, or remembers serving with me. I also have a couple of photographs of the men I trained with at Yeovilton, and of me stood in front of my Bedford QL in Korea is anyone would like them.
Kind Regards,
Bill Alvey
